How To Choose The Right Roofing Contractor

It's time to choose someone to replace your roof, make a repair, or do some renovating; how do you decide? There are many factors to consider when choosing the right person to get the job done. Every roofer does things a little bit differently and has a different set of skills, so take your time and be sure to ask questions! To help you choose the right professional for your project, follow along for some tips and tricks!

Know The Difference

During your search for a roofing contractor, there are two types to consider: independent contractors and roofing companies. Independent roofing contractors are great for quick or minor repairs. They may specialize in a particular style, but it's important to note that because they either work independently or with subcontractors, it may take longer to finish large projects.

Roofing companies are an ideal option for more extensive projects. They are more likely to complete large jobs quickly, and their work is typically covered by manufacturer warranties.  However, you may not have the same point of contact for each phase of the project. This doesn't mean they won't do a fantastic job, though!

Ask Questions

Before making your choice, you must ask as many questions as possible. Doing this will ensure that you are not only getting the proper services but that the contractor is licensed and equipped to perform the tasks necessary. Here are a few questions you should ask:

  • Do you have a current license to do this work in my area?
  • What types of roofing do you install?
  • What types of insurance do you have, and what is the coverage?
  • Can you give me two or three references to check?
  • Do you offer a free on-site inspection?
  • Do you take photos during the inspection and after completing the project?
  • Will you give me a written estimate after the inspection?
  • Do you do roofing repairs? How much do they cost?
  • Is your work covered by a manufacturer warranty?
  • How do you keep projects on schedule?

Get Multiple Bids

It's not a bad idea to get bids from a few different roofing contractors before choosing the one that works for you. There are a variety of options with various pricing tiers, skill levels, and availabilities, so don't be afraid to be picky. No matter which bid you choose, always be sure your roofer has the right qualifications and feels confident in their abilities. If your project is more specific, you may have fewer contractors to choose from. Many roofers can install and repair asphalt shingles but fewer have experience with materials like cedar shakes or natural slate, so make sure your roofer has the proper experience before you make a decision.

When you're searching for the right contractor, don't forget that the quality of work is always more important than the price when it comes to roofing. Roof installation and repair can be a major investment, so it's important to make sure you choose to work with a reputable roofing contractor who can provide the highest quality workmanship.
