What type of roofing system?

Factors to consider:

Durability

You want a system that will last. Material such as slate, copper and standing seam metal are by far more durable than asphalt shingles.

Cost

Everyone tries to have a budget and cost is certainly relative to what type of material you use. But weigh the differences. Standing seam metal may cost 20 % more initially than shingles, but it will last 3 to 4 times longer. This would make the standing seam metal a better value.

Aesthetics

Some people want a roof that doesn’t leak. An architecturally designed shingle would look okay and meet their needs. You also have those that want a roof that not only won’t leak but makes a statement in appearance. A county manor home with Vermont slate shingles with copper trim for a roof would meet their desires.

Choosing a Contractor.

All contractors are not alike. You want a reputable company. Things to check for include:

Proof of insurance

Experience... how long in business? Will they be here 5-10 years from now?

How long will my roof last?

Most new roof systems are designed to provide useful service for about 20 years.

Some types of roofing systems last longer. Slate roofs can last 70 years or more; metal roofs 40 to 50 years or even longer.

The life span is determined by a number of factors; such as climate and environmental conditions, building and roof designs, material quality and most important — proper application.
